Criticle component of suspension system: The Lower Control Arm

Brief about lower control arm

A lower control arm is a critical component. It plays an important role in the suspension system's functioning. For accurate and precision working, we must analyze the load act using the durability testing method. Moreover, the various automobile design concept also has a significant impact, for example, cam-less concept, advanced suspension system.

After studying the working principle of a double-wishbone independent suspension system. We can easily predict how each part has its critical importance in the suspension system's safe and longtime working. So, it is important to analyze and predict the behavior of various components and systems. A more focused lower control arm of the suspension system operates under the worst and continuous situation. It takes up braking and cornering loads during various wheel movements such as bouncing, rolling, and pitching. So, the lower control arm must design properly because failure will lead to the hampered whole suspension system.

The reason why the lower control arm need to analyze

So, as we studied above the suspension system has to travel over irregular road, bump, pit and fall. It means that the lower control arm has to withstand a high magnitude load during working. So, it is important to analyze the suspension system to predict suspension behavior during actual working so that improvement can be made.  More precisely, they are depicted below:
  • High magnitude of the load acting on lower control arm each movement of the vehicle produces the lateral force, longitudinal force and traverse force of high magnitude on lower control arm during the working of suspension system this cause bending of the lower control arm.
  • Road irregularities As a vehicle move on the ground, it experiences jerk and unevenness in the wheel and suspension system due to irregular road profile. This leads to damage of the suspension system's component and joint to wear out, which leads to fatigue failure of a component.
While designing, we also have to consider parameters of suspension system design mentioned in the earlier post of advantages of the independent suspension system.
